Introduction
Hello! this page Teaches you
how to:
- Describe Matter
- Sort Matter
- Mixtures
Matter Is Everything that has mass or takes up space
Some things that are matter:
- water
- bricks
- air
- humans
- mostly everything
Some things that are NOT Matter
- any sort of feeling
- light
- Darkness
Describing Matter
Here are a few ways you could Describe Matter.
First there is the traditional way of:
Then There's other methods such as:
- Mass
- Malleability
- Solubility
- Color
- Volume
- Conductivity
- Mangnetivity
here are some ways you could find some of those properties.
- To find Conductivity get a battery, Wire and a light bulb.
Connect the wire on the bottom and the top. Put the object on top of the top wire,
put the light bulb on top of the object, if the bulb lights up then the object conducts electricity,
if not the object doesn't conduct electricity.
If you are confused take a look at picture below----------
-
To find Volume get a measuring cylinder. Fill it about 1/4 of it with water ,
drop the object in the water whatever number the water goes to is it's Volume
Mixtures
Mixtures are substances made by combining two or more substances.
But before we look at some Examples We must know some vocab.
- Solution (Mixture that has a solute that dissolves into a solvent (if this confuses you look down below)
- Saturation (The point which no more solute can dissolve into a solution)
- Solute (a item that dissolves into the solution)
- Solvent (item added to a solution or liquid)
Things to keep in mind:to be a solution the particles must be equally distributed, and
solutions can be separated again back into the substances that made them
here are some examples of solutions being separated
Examples:
- Salt Water (put coffee filter inside a sift. Put a pan underneath the sift, Pour salt water on the coffee filter. wait a few days, the liquid in the tray turned into salt)
- Kool aid (put kool aid in plasic cup, wait a few days and the water will evaporate and the kool aid will soak into the bottle)
